The Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation offers scholarships that cover the cost of tuition, fees, and books for attendance at a public university or college in Nebraska. The scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis to first-time, entering freshmen who are residents of Nebraska and graduates of a Nebraska high school. However, there are a limited number of scholarships so the Foundation is unable to provide awards to all eligible candidates.
Scholarship decisions are based on a variety of factors, including a student’s financial need and academic performance. Students whose family income is up to $95,000 may satisfy the financial need criterion and are encouraged to apply. Students do not need to be Pell eligible to qualify. The minimum high school cumulative grade point average required for application is 2.5 on a 4-point scale or 80 on a 100-point scale.
The scholarship may be used at the University of Nebraska (UNK, UNL, UNO), Chadron State, Peru State, and Wayne State as well as Central, Metropolitan, Mid-Plains, Northeast, Southeast, and Western Nebraska community colleges. The scholarship provides support for up to five years for students at a four-year institution and up to three years for those attending a community college. Scholarship recipients who attend one of the University of Nebraska campuses at Kearney, Lincoln, or Omaha also become part of the Thompson Scholars Learning Community.
The application is online and must be submitted between January 1, 2013 and March 1, 2013 for the 2013-2014 school year. If you are eligible and interested we encourage you to apply early in the process. More information on the scholarship is available at: www.buffettscholarships.org/scholarships.shtml
