A Message of Celebration from our Principal Dr. Nancy Becker

Principal Dr. Nancy Becker
Our theme for the 07-08 year is Celebrate Success. This phrase is the last line to the North Star motto: Charting our Course, Navigating the Journey and Celebrating Success. Each day 'Gator students and staff work to chart and navigate their way through this process called education. Yet sometimes we forget to celebrate success. Celebrating success is equally important as we work to reinforce the things students and staff do well. I know when you’re asked “What’s the story about North Star?” you’ll have many positive things to share. CELEBRATING SUCCESS about our LNS 'Gators is the North Star way!

Spirit Week
Famous Navigator Returns Home! North Star Celebrates!
I searched the world far and wide,
Looking for school spirit and pride.
In San Francisco and DC too,
The schools there didn’t have a clue.
So on to Egypt, France, and Spain,
I continued my quest in vain.
But no matter where I sought,
School pride and spirit there was not.
  When I saw from afar,
A brilliant, dazzling, glowing star.
Shining down brightly from the sky,
On my very own North Star High.
Filled with students full of pride,
The glow was coming from inside.
Where every day and all year through,
North Star pride and spirit is ringing true!

North Star launches College Prep Academy
graduation hatLincoln North Star High School launches its first annual College Prep Summer Academy

Through this summer academy, 24 students are spending the week preparing for the ACT, visiting colleges, and learning how the college application process works. Students wrote essays and collected teacher recommendations to gain admission. The College Prep Academy seeks to enhance the desire to achieve within a student population that too often does not attain a college degree. "As we strive to increase student achievement and close the achievement gap, one of our top goals is to increase the number of students from diverse backgrounds who attend post secondary institutions," said LNS Principal Dr. Nancy Becker.

The academy will feature motivational speakers such as Aaron Davis, Eddie Brown, Dr. Derrick Anderson, T.J. McDowell, Jose Soto, and Senator Dave Landis. The participating North Star teachers are Al Bock and Cyndy Maddux. John Baylor of Baylor Test Prep is providing the test preparation. "The Academy could not be successful without this community-wide support," Becker said. Students will travel by bus to the University of Nebraska-Kearney, Hastings College, and Doane College. The Academy will visit the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and Nebraska Wesleyan.

Funding for the College Prep Academy has been provided through the Education Quest College Access Grant and the Foundation for Lincoln Public Schools. "We hope to grow the Academy in the future by including students from all Lincoln public high schools and increasing the number of underserved students involved," Becker said.

Attendance Procedures
  • A letter will be sent home when a student has reached 3, 5, and 10 unexcused absences (TR) in one or more period.
  • An attendance failure will be determined by unexcused absences (TR) rather then overall days missed.  Students accumulating 5 unexcused absences (TR) in a quarter class or 10 in a semester class will receive an attendance failure and receive NO CREDIT.
  • A student can appeal the attendance failure to receive credit, but MUST fill out an appeal form, provide documentation of reason for unexcused absences and show a positive change in attendance in that class.
  • Important Reminder: The district policy states that a students absence must be cleared  within 48 hours, so it is very important that students are called in for appointments, illness etc. within 48 hours.  If a student comes late or leaves school for any reason they must check in/out at the attendance office. Please contact the attendance office with questions: 436-1305 Ext.1. Learn more...
North Star Receives EducationQuest Grant
EQ logo North Star Receives $100,000 EducationQuest Grant
EducationQuest Foundation selected Lincoln North Star as one of 13 recipients of its College Access Grants Program designed to help Nebraska high schools increase the number of students who go to college.  North Star will receive $25,000 a year for the next four years for a total of $100,000. “As we strive to increase student achievement and close the achievement gap, a top goal is to increase the number of students from diverse backgrounds who attend postsecondary institutions,” said North Star Administrator David Bell. - Learn more at http://www.educationquest.org.
North Star Tardy Policy       Tardy = 30 min. Detention
Students are losing valuable instruction time when not getting to class on time. It also affects the learning environment for the rest of the students who are on time and prepared to learn. Consequently, any student in the hallway after the tardy bell has sounded is subject to an automatic 30-minute after school detention. Any student stopped in the hallway without a pass or walks into class late will be given a 30-minute after school detention. Those who do not show up on the first night assigned to ASD will get a written notice on the second day. Failure to complete the after school detention will result in a one day out of school suspension. Every day the after school detention list is posted on the Main Office window at the end of the school day. Thank you for your support of student learning.

Early Release Tuesdays
Early Release Tuesdays allow teachers time to collaborate on Academy work. Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday classes are extended by a few minutes and Tuesday classes are shortened by a few minutes to make the innovative program possible. Students will be excited to know they still have the same amount of instructional time in their week as other LPS schools. :-)

Bus Schedules
Below is a selected schedule of the Star Tran bus routes that service North Star High School. Due to the shortened schedule on Tuesdays we recommend that Arnold Heights/Highlands students use the 27th St Shuttle to the downtown reconnect point.
